While it goes without saying that it is important to develop bonds of friendships with people around the world, it is even more important to nurture warm, friendly relations with the people living in our own neighborhoods and communities. The bonds of friendship and camaradarie that we cultivate with people around us, are the very treasures of our life.

Simple, ordinary citizens who care about the good of the world: May you become good neighbors, who are respected by one and all, who can pacify and purify the raging tempest that brews in a friend's heart, who act in good conscience for the sake of the community as well as the workplace. These are the qualities I seek in you.

I really hope that as parents you become good friends with your children. I know that there is no parent who doesn't feel instinctive love for their child. But what I want to ask of you, is that in addition to loving them, that you also deepen your friendship with them. To be friends means to respect them as wonderful individuals.

When we wholeheartedly praise and applaud the success of our friends, and celebrate together with them in their moment of glory, good fortune accrues in our own lives. On the other hand, if we feel envious of them or make their achievement seem like it wasn't really that big an accomplishment after all, then we actually end up erasing our own good fortune. Women who can go the extent of helping their friends win success and good fortune are doctors of happiness.
